Facts and Figures
Hull City Council is recognised as an authority on 20mph Zones - they created their first one in 1995 and they now more than a quarter of their roads are limited to 20mph . They were kind enough to supply us with the following statistics:
Mean speeds in 77 20mph zones (56 using speed humps only, 18 with speed cushions only, 2 with no physical measures and 1 with pedestrian priority signals.):
Road Humps Only: 30 - 17 mph
Speed Cushions Only: 28 - 20 mph
Cushions and Narrowing Schemes: 32 - 19 mph

Road casualty figures in 2002 compared with 94-98 average:
Hull's - Minus 7.1%
Yorkshire and Humberside - Plus 0.9%
National - Minus 5.4%.

Since introducing 20mph zones
Child casualties have dropped 32.6% against a national drop of 21.8%
Child pedestrian accidents in 20mph zones have dropped by three quarters.

In their consultations with communities:
80 - 100% of respondents are in favour of 20mph zones
70 - 95% are in favour of humps and or cushions

In a survey of 4,600 Hull residents in areas where 20mph zones have been introduced: 72% though traffic had slowed down as a result
26% thought there was less traffic as a result of the scheme
48% thought the scheme had made the area a more pleasant place to live
71% would recommend traffic calming to someone in another area.
